A Balanced Approach to Label Printing
Nordic Label operates a balanced mix of conventional flexo and digital printing technologies. While their traditional flexo presses handle longer runs of pressure-sensitive product labels, the introduction of theXeikon digital presses has brought new opportunities. These digital presses, originally sourced through Nordic Label’s partnership with the Asteria Group, complement their operations by specializing in short-run applications.
“The main differentiator between flexo and digital is really the run length,” explains Erik Björkenheim, Deputy Managing Director at Nordic Label. “For shorter runs, the Xeikon presses offer flexibility, especially for projects that require variable data printing.”
Meeting Diverse Market Needs
Operating out of Finland, Nordic Label primarily serves local and regional markets, including Sweden. Their labels cater to a variety of industries, with a strong focus on the food sector. “Food labels make up the majority of our work,” Björkenheim shares, noting that their customer base includes large meat producers and grocery suppliers. The company also produces beverage labels, today most are wraparound or wet-glue types rather but pressure-sensitive labels are growing.
By offering both flexo and digital printing options, Nordic Label ensures it can meet the needs of both large-scale producers and smaller businesses requiring short runs. “Digital gives us opportunities to focus on customers who need smaller print runs,” says Björkenheim.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is a growing focus for Nordic Label, as it is for many in the packaging industry. Customers increasingly seek solutions that minimize environmental impact, and Nordic Label is proactive in addressing these demands.
“Carbon footprint is a topic that many of our customers want to discuss,” Björkenheim notes. The company leverages the advantages of Xeikon’s digital printing technology, which reduces waste through shorter setup times and eliminates the need fors, solvents, and extensive washing. Additionally, the use of FDA approved dry toners from Xeikon ensures compliance with food safety regulations—an essential consideration in the food packaging sector.
While not yet mainstream, recycled materials are gaining traction among Nordic Label’s plate customers. The company is ready to support this shift as part of its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Looking Ahead: Growth and Specialization
As Nordic Label looks to the future, it aims to further develop its digital capabilities and focus more on the short-run market. While traditional flexo printing remains a core strength, the flexibility and efficiency of Xeikon’s digital presses are opening new doors, particularly among smaller businesses with unique needs.
By maintaining a dual focus on high-quality production and sustainability, Nordic Label is well-positioned to meet the challenges of an evolving market while continuing to serve its loyal customers in Finland and beyond.
